The physical significance of Planck length is that it is the distance light travels in one unit of Planck time. ![]() The unit that is smaller than femtometer is the Planck length denoted by lƿ. We also hear how scientists’ love for glass tubes aided in the discovery of electrons. And protons are made up of even smaller particles called quarks. And then those atoms are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons, which are even smaller. ![]() What is smaller than a particle?īut those molecules are made of atoms, which are even smaller. Those atoms are also matter and are even smaller and harder to see than germs. It is deemed that quarks are composed of smaller particles – preons. While the size of protons and neutrons is of the order of a Fermi (10−15 m), the size of quarks is ~10−18 m. But going by mass, yes, there are smaller particles than quarks like electrons and electron neutrinos and there corresponding antiparticles. Quarks are elementary particles and as such they are not made up of any other particles. ![]()
